Why Joy Can Feel So Uncomfortable

Have you ever noticed what happens after a really good day?

You finally feel peaceful.

Something wonderful happens.

You laugh deeply.

You feel hopeful.

For a brief moment, life feels light.

And then...

Your mind starts scanning for what could go wrong.

You wonder if the feeling will last.

You remember everything that still needs to be done.

You brace yourself for the next disappointment.

If you've ever experienced this, you're not imagining it.

For many people, especially those who have lived through trauma, chronic stress, or prolonged uncertainty, joy can feel surprisingly unfamiliar.

Sometimes it even feels unsafe.

Receiving joy is part of healing.

Many of us have learned how to survive difficult seasons.

Far fewer of us have learned how to stay present when life is actually good.

The Receive With Ease: 5-Day Challenge offers gentle daily practices that help you expand your nervous system's capacity to receive not only abundance and support—but also peace, joy, and delight.

Your Nervous System Doesn't Only Remember Pain

One of the most important things to understand about healing is this:

Your nervous system learns patterns.

If you've spent years expecting the next crisis...

Preparing for disappointment...

Managing everyone else's needs...

Living in uncertainty...

Your body becomes incredibly skilled at vigilance.

That vigilance doesn't automatically disappear simply because life improves.

Your nervous system continues asking:

"What am I missing?"

"What happens next?"

"Should I trust this?"

This is why some people struggle to relax even during vacations.

Or feel anxious immediately after receiving wonderful news.

Their bodies are still preparing for impact.

When Calm Feels Strange

Many people assume healing means finally feeling calm.

Ironically, calm can initially feel uncomfortable.

Not because calm is dangerous.

Because it is unfamiliar.

Imagine listening to loud music for years.

Silence might initially feel unsettling.

The silence isn't the problem.

Your nervous system simply hasn't become accustomed to it.

Joy often works the same way.

If your body has lived in survival mode, peace may feel strangely empty at first.

Healing involves learning that stillness is not the absence of life.

It is often the presence of safety.

Why Some People Wait for the Other Shoe to Drop

Have you ever caught yourself thinking:

"This is too good to be true."

"Something bad is going to happen."

"I shouldn't get my hopes up."

These thoughts don't necessarily mean you're pessimistic.

They may be protective.

If you've experienced sudden loss...

Unexpected betrayal...

Financial instability...

Illness...

Or repeated disappointment...

Your brain may have learned that joy is often followed by pain.

So it tries to protect you by preparing for disappointment before it arrives.

Unfortunately, that preparation often prevents you from fully experiencing the joy that is here now.

The Mother Wound and the Permission to Feel Good

Many women grew up in environments where survival took center stage.

Caregivers were working multiple jobs.

Managing stress.

Navigating discrimination.

Holding families together.

In those environments, joy sometimes became secondary.

Not because it wasn't valued.

Because there simply wasn't much room for it.

Many women unconsciously inherited the belief that happiness must wait until everything is handled.

But healing gently asks a different question:

What if joy isn't a reward?

What if it is part of how your body heals?

Reflection

Complete this sentence:

When I start feeling really happy, I usually...

Notice what comes next.

Do you become productive?

Distract yourself?

Start worrying?

Look for problems?

Question whether you deserve it?

Your answer isn't something to judge.

It's something to understand.

Joy Is Also a Receiving Practice

Joy asks us to receive.

To receive beauty.

Connection.

Pleasure.

Laughter.

Wonder.

Gratitude.

Presence.

These moments seem small.

But together they teach your nervous system an entirely new experience:

"Nothing bad happened because I allowed myself to enjoy this moment."

Over time, those experiences become new evidence.

The body slowly learns that goodness can exist without immediately expecting loss.

Try This Practice Today

For five minutes today...

Do something that brings you genuine joy.

Drink your favorite tea slowly.

Sit in the sun.

Listen to music without multitasking.

Watch your children laugh.

Notice the wind.

Pet your dog.

Dance in your kitchen.

And while you're doing it...

Notice when your mind tries to leave.

Gently return to the moment.

You aren't practicing happiness.

You're practicing receiving.

Imagine Trusting Joy

Imagine no longer feeling guilty for enjoying your life.

Imagine allowing yourself to laugh without immediately preparing for disappointment.

Imagine believing that peaceful seasons don't always have to end in crisis

Imagine creating a nervous system that knows how to remain open when life becomes beautiful.

This is one of the deepest gifts of learning to receive.

The Making Abundance Inevitable bundle was created to help you build the embodied capacity to experience abundance in all its forms—including joy, rest, love, success, and inner peace. Through somatic practices, guided reflection, and nervous system healing, you'll gradually teach your body that receiving goodness is not something to fear.

If you're ready to begin gently, start with the Receive With Ease: 5-Day Challenge. Sometimes healing begins not by changing your life—but by learning how to stay present for the beautiful moments already arriving.

Because joy isn't something you have to earn.

Sometimes it's something your nervous system is finally ready to receive.
